Google Talk is one-click phone and instant messenger software that enables you to talk to your companion when desired, or send an instant message instead. It does not run on Windows 98, but will run on Windows 2000, XP, and newer. The messenger function works well to send links, statistics, and other items that can then be discussed when you click the Google Talk telephone icon.

Most people think you need an invitation to join GMail, which you must have before you can get Google Talk. Google has made accounts available, without an invitation or Google SMS, to anyone in Australia and New Zealand since August 9, 2006 and Japan since August 23, 2006. In the US you can use your cell phone to receive an invitation as a text message. You can also combine various log-in information such as Google Talk, Adsense, Adwords, and GMail. The bottom line is that you must have Gmail before you can do Google Talk.
HOW TO GET GMAIL: You can get Gmail by signing up for Blogger, which is also a Google company. Visit Blogger here. Once you get Gmail get Google Talk here: Google Talk
Gmail and eBay:
Buyers and sellers on eBay should use Gmail to receive instant notifications of winning bids, outbid notices, items that sold, and more. Why wait for your regular email when it is often too late? The trick is to get Google Talk, and use Gmail for eBay. Run Google Talk in the system tray and your Gmail notices will instantly pop up in a small box. No guessing, no waiting, no missed bids, and no missed eBay sales. It is a perfect combination.
Spam filter and email forwarding:
Forward your regular email account to your Gmail account. Not only will you instantly know when you got email, but Gmail will automagically filter out the spam. Gmail spam filters are very accurate. You can also use Outlook and Outlook Express with Gmail.
Google started their first Voice over the Internet project with 'The Gizmo Project'. Many people correctly assumed Google would go further with a one-click telephone application which will be interfaced with Google search. It is already in use, and it too requires Google Talk. The software is a small download, it installs easily, and is easy to use. You can send invitations to your friends right from the software. You have the option to save chat transcripts to your GMail account, thus the requirement to be subscribed to both.
The main Google Talk website is here and this opens in a new window. We use their service. The program lets people set up worldwide Voip communications. Mac and Linux users can connect to Google Talk using other IM clients including Adium, iChat, Gaim, Miranda, Psi and Trillian Pro. Google Talk uses the Jabber/XMPP protocol. You can use analogue, USB, or wireless headsets. Even if you have a hardphone and ATA adapter you can use Google Talk from your computer as a nice addition to your Voip capability.
In late 2006 rumors were that Google had abandoned click to call, but it is still functional among Google Talk users and it works well. On the Internet, LAN, or WAN it is a very nice feature with no echo and low latency.
