Using your voip capable router with Voice over the internet

Live Phone Networks Helpful Hint  When hooking your router to DSL, use it in GATEWAY MODE instead of router mode. You are sending each computer on your network through the gateway to the DSL modem. The same applies to cable modem sharing. The CD provided by your provider only works if you have one computer and it is directly connected to the router and the router is in ROUTER MODE

The most common routers in home use today are the LinkSys and Network Everywhere routers. Network Everywhere is a Linksys product. You should not need to make any changes to your router. Even if you use the router to link multiple computers to your cable or DSL connection, the router should handle NAT issues without the need to open ports or forward ports.

NAT (Network Address Translation) is the translation of an Internet Protocol address (IP address) used within one network to a different IP address known within another network.

Each address request matches a previous request. Since your SIP phone is in contact with the SIP server, your router should handle the address translations smoothly without modifications.

Preconfigured phones such as Stanaphone, Glophone, and Skype do not generally require any router configuration. The customer or end ouser wants ease of installationa dn a hands off approach to telephone calls over the internet and these products qualify as such.

If you plan to run multiple SIP phones behind your router or firewall it is possible that router programming may be required, but as phones become smarter it is unlikely. As an example, PBX systems were once big and cumbersome and they were located at the phone company. Over the years PBX systems evolved and were located at the business instead. Today's PBX functions can be incorporated into a handset instead. The way in which software handles todays routers is also changing.
